What the public can do

The public contributes heavily to the waste problem. Developing wise purchasing habits and improving disposal methods can significantly improve the situation.

Conscientious members of society should:

• sort their refuse and take part in recycling and reuse programmes;

• choose durable, long-life products;

• give preference to recycled and recyclable products;

• cut down on packaging and reuse it where possible; and

• compost biodegradable materials.

The public should be aware of commonly used products that contain hazardous substances .
