The East Siberian Sea The East Siberian Sea is a marginal sea of the Arctic Ocean located between the New Siberian Islands and Wrangel Island. It is covered with ice for most of the year. It is a shallow sea with a mean depth of 45 m, and maximum depth of 358 m. Its total surface area is 936,000 km2. Some bigger islands in this sea are the New Siberian Islands, the Bear Islands and Ayon. The bigger bays are the Kolymsky, Chaunskaya and Omulyahskaya. The major port is Pevek. Indigirka and Kolyma are the two mainland rivers that flow into the East Siberian Sea. Their combined average annual inflow reaches 300 km3. The waters of the East Siberian Sea are used for navigation and industrial water supply. Seal and walrus hunts and fishing are also very active in this sea. |
