The Barents Sea

The Barents Sea lies between the northern coasts of Scandinavia and Russia, and the islands of Svalbard (Norway), Franz Josef Land and Novaya Zemlya (both of Russia). Its hydrological characteristics are affected by its location between the Atlantic Ocean and the Arctic Basin. The Atlantic keeps its western water from freezing, whereas in the north its sea surface is partially covered by polar ice for parts of the year.

The coastline of the Barents Sea is strongly indented with gulfs and fiords. The Pechora is the biggest river draining into the sea.

The coastal area of the Barents Sea is not heavily populated; the largest town is Murmansk, which has a large naval base and heavy industry. The main activity along the coast is commercial fishing concentrated in Norwegian towns and villages.
