The market for chemicals

Scientists have identified more than 10 million chemical compounds (natural or man-made). About 100,000 of them are produced commercially, and 200 to 300 new chemicals enter the market each year.

Estimates show that the current production of chemicals worldwide is about 400 million tonnes. Europe is one of the largest chemical-producing regions in the world, supplying 38 percent of the global turnover.
