The Emerald Network

This network is composed of Areas of Scientific Conservation Interest (ASCI) for Europe, closely linked to Natura 2000 <europa.eu.int/comm/environment/
nature/themes.htm>).

In 1989 the Standing Committee of the Bern Convention proposed this network as part of its implementation, and in 1996 it resolved to set up the network, which would benefit from the "soft law" approach of the steering committee's recommendations and from the wide geographical reach of the convention, now covering 50 nations.
