The Convention on
the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats
Signed in Bern in 1979, this convention is a key instrument for the
conservation of biodiversity within Europe. It is aimed at conservation
of wild fauna and flora and their natural habitats. The 45 European
and African countries (as well as the European Community) that are
party to the convention must implement national measures to maintain
the population of the wild flora and fauna to satisfy ecological,
scientific and cultural requirements.
